Description: On January 16, 1897, Special Deputy Sheriff Allen was deputized by Sheriff William Fransham to assist him to serve an arrest warrant. The two suspects were cornered in a barn by the posse and fired, striking Deputy Allen in the head. Deputy Allen, despite his injuries, was able to identify his attacker. Sheriff Fransham was also wounded but survived. Deputy Allen died of his injuries two weeks later on February 2, 1897. One of the suspects was arrested later that year and charged with murder.
