Description: Officer Avery sustained fatal head injuries when he and another officer were attacked by inmates with pool balls stuffed in a sock and free weights in the recreation building of Lansing Correctional Facility. Officer Avery?s brain stem was severed in the assault. He was kept on life support in the hospital until his organs could be retrieved for donation.
