Description: Sheriff Board was shot and killed in retaliation regarding an on-duty law enforcement action that occurred twelve years prior. In 1901, Sheriff Board and Deputy S. Suttlemyer attempted to arrest two brothers who were causing a public disturbance. One of the men pulled a gun and was fatally shot by Deputy Suttlemyer. Sheriff Board subdued and arrested the second brother. Twelve years later, the brother went to an office building where the now-retired sheriff worked. According to witnesses, the man asked Mr. Board for the whereabouts of Mr. Suttlemyer and Mr. Board responded that he was in town. The man pulled a 45 Colt and fatally shot Mr. Board six times. His assailant was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Sheriff W.L. Ellis. Sheriff Ellis was wounded but survived.
