Description: Special Deputy Marshal Beck and Marshal Lewis Merritt were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect for whiskey violations. They found the man in a corn field in Muskogee County, Indian Territory (current-day Oklahoma) and as the two marshals attempted to arrest the suspect and other violators a gun-battle began. Marshal Beck and his fellow marshal were fatally wounded.
