Description: Investigating suspicious persons outside of a church. (Mr Mathis was dressed as a woman, Mrs Mathis as a man). As Clarence Berry approached the couple, Mr Mathis shouted, "I got you" and fired twice with a .25 caliber handgun, striking Officer Berry in the lower abdomen. Mr Mathis, following Berry's death, was charged and convicted of murder in June of 1922.
