Description: Detective Birney was shot as he attempted to arrest three bank robbers. Detective Birney was off-duty in his unmarked cruiser when he received a robbery in progress call. In plain clothes and carrying his police radio, Detective Birney entered the bank, passing through the first set of doors that led to the lobby. The suspect forced the door against Detective Birney which knocked him to the ground. Before Detective Birney could draw his weapon, one of the robbers fired and shot him in the chest. Detective Birney was transported to the hospital where he died. Three suspects were convicted of murder and robbery. The shooter received a sentence of life in prison. The other two suspects received 40 and 50 years in prison.
