Description: Officer Byrne was shot while guarding a witness involved in a narcotics case. Officer Byrne was shot several times in the head at close range while he sat in a patrol car, guarding a house. The assassination was ordered by a jailed druglord who was seeking revenge for his arrest. He was convicted of racketeering charges that included ordering the hit on Officer Byrne and was sentenced to life in prison. Four men were convicted of carrying out the murder of Officer Byrne and received sentences of 25 years to life.
