Description: Officer Breece and a game warden were searching for an escaped convict in a wooded area. The convict was aware that the officers were looking for him so he hid in the brush. When the officers were close enough, he fired and killed Officer Breece. King County Posseman Neil Rowley was also shot and killed. Detective Charles Raymond was shot while attempting to arrest the suspect earlier that day. King County Deputy John Williams was also mortally wounded and died eight months later. The suspect, a former member of the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Gang, had escaped from prison the day before and was the subject of an intense manhunt. The suspect was wanted for the murders of Correctional Officers Bailey Tiffany, S. Thurston Jones and Frank Ferrell of the Oregon State Penitentiary. On August 6, 1902, the suspect committed suicide after being wounded during a shootout with law enforcement officers.
