Description: Deputy Sheriff Bellard died from carbon monoxide poisoning while under a mandatory evacuation order during Hurricane Gustav. Deputy Bellard’s platoon was to be housed at a local elementary school but when the site lost conventional power, the platoon was released to alternate shelter. Corporal Bellard elected to stay with his father in a shop adjacent to his father’s residence with a gasoline powered generator for electricity. The fumes from the generator circulated into the shop’s air conditioning unit overcoming Corporal Bellard and his father as they slept. When Deputy Bellard failed to report to work, a deputy was dispatched the residence and found both men dead.
