Description: On August 22, 1937, Patrolman Murphy and Patrolman Henry Bell were shot as they attempted to arrest two robbery suspects. Patrolman Bell and his partner noticed a suspect vehicle used in a recent robbery and initiated a traffic stop. While Patrolman Bell's partner went to the nearest patrol call box to check the registration, Patrolman Bell was held at gunpoint and ordered into the suspect vehicle. Patrolman Lawrence Murphy was shot as he stopped the vehicle and dismounted his motorcycle. The suspects then fatally shot Patrolman Bell. Patrolman Murphy was also shot in an exchange of gunfire and died of his injuries on September 13, 1937. Their assailant was convicted of murder and executed.
