Description: Sheriff Burkhalter was shot by a fellow deputy as the deputy dismounted from his horse (friendly fire). The shotgun was loaded with buckshot and both hammers were down. The horse moved suddenly and the hammer struck the saddle, discharging the gun. Sheriff Burkhalter was shot in the chest and died at the scene. The posse of lawmen were on the trail of several family members accused of murder.
