Description: Sheriff-Elect Black was shot and killed as he opened the front door of his residence in an act of revenge. The sheriff had recently won the election for Sheriff of Lamar County, Texas, and was scheduled to assume office the day after he was assassinated. Sheriff-elect Black was shot and killed by a man, John Middletown, who escaped from the Lamar County Jail. Middlton had been recruited by Sheriff G. M. Crook, the man whom Sheriff-elect Black beat in the election, and several of his deputies to kill Sheriff-elect Black.
