Description: Auxiliary Captain Bender was struck and killed by a vehicle as he manned a roadblock. Captain Bender was assigned to restrict the area to stop all traffic because of dangerous driving conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Betsy. Captain Bender was thrown 27 feet by the impact and received a fractured skull and fracture of both legs. He was rushed to the hospital where he died.
