Description: Marshal Brewster was on duty making a routine patrol of the small town of Sultan when a citizen advised him of a suspicious vehicle in the alley behind the local bank. Marshal Brewster found the vehicle with a good deal of ammunition and firearms inside. Marshal Brewster took custody of the firearms and placed them in the town hall. Marshal Brewster was taking custody of the car when further investigation revealed a suspicious person in the area. Marshal Brewster placed the suspect under arrest and was taking him to the jail, when the suspect pulled a gun, yelled, "Put up your hands," and shot Marshal Brewster point blank. Marshal Brewster was hit in the left lung and died instantly. Although tried, and sentenced to be hanged, the suspect picked the lock of the jail, broke a window, and escaped. He was never recaptured.
