Description: Officer Bass was accidentally shot by a fellow Virginia State Penitentiary guard who was firing at a group of escaping convicts. Eight prisoners seized a truck, overpowered and abducted Officer Bass and Officer R. Ream and drove towards the entrance gate. Officer C. Smith opened fire on the truck, fatally wounding Officer Bass. Officer Ream was also struck but survived. Four convicts were killed and four were apprehended. Friendly Fire.
