Description: On June 14, 1915, Deputy Sheriff Boulware, Sheriff Adam Hood and five deputies were escorting a prisoner to court when they were fired upon by five men who were attempting to lynch the prisoner. The five men were relatives of the accused victim. Sheriff Hood suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died later that evening. The prisoner was fatally shot. One suspect was shot and killed. Four suspects were arrested and charged with murder. Deputy Sheriffs Earle Stevenson, Alex Broome and B.R. Beckham were also shot but survived. Deputy Sheriff Raleigh Boulware sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and died of his injuries three weeks later on July 3, 1915.
