Description: Police Officer Backes was struck by a vehicle after conducting a traffic stop. While on patrol, Officer Backes saw a motorist driving with a flat tire and stopped the vehicle. The motorist was uncooperative and combative and a struggle ensued between him and Officer Backes. A passing vehicle struck both men. Officer Backes was pronounced dead at the hospital. The motorist was charged with second degree murder but died of his injuries a week later.
