Description: Marshal Burks and Night Watchman W. Stiff responded to a telephone call regarding prowlers. The lawmen found and arrested three suspects. Watchman Stiff escorted two of the suspects to his patrol vehicle and Marshal Burks took the female suspect to his vehicle. The residence owner, Mrs. Graham, thought Marshal Burks was one of the suspects and shot him fatally in the abdomen. Marshal Burks died the next day.
