Description: Sheriff Brito was shot as he and two of his sons, who were also deputies, were returning from a fandango. As the horse-drawn coach approached a crossing, the suspect came from behind and fired through the leather curtain at the back of the carriage. Sheriff Brito was struck twice in the head. Despite large rewards offered for information relative to the crime, his assailant was never caught.
