Description: Sheriff Brooks was shot as he left the courthouse after attending a hearing involving a suspect he had arrested days earlier for disturbing the peace. The suspect left the courthouse, went across the street, retrieved a rifle and began shooting at Sheriff Brooks. A gun battle ensued, and Sheriff Brooks was shot in the chest. The suspect was shot and killed by the sheriff's brother, who was also present during the gun battle. Sheriff Brooks died of his injuries four days later.
