Description: Deputy Marshal Bentz was shot and killed by a Cherokee deputy sheriff after arresting several men for assaulting federal officers in the Going Snake District of Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Deputy Marshal Bentz was standing outside the Flint Courthouse when a Cherokee deputy shot him. Another man exited the courthouse and shot Marshal Bentz in the chest as he lay on the ground.
