Description: Officer Brown and Night Marshal Thomas P. Stephens responded to a report of a drunken man waving a gun at motorists in front of a church being used for a lodge meeting. When they attempted to arrest the man, he and a group of friends pulled their guns, shot, and killed Officer Brown and Night Marshal Stephens. The shooting deaths of these two officers sparked riots in the town that resulted in several other people being killed.
