Description: Sheriff Berg and Officer Harold Foley were returning from a hearing before the Court Commissioner, when their patrol car was struck by another vehicle. Sheriff Berg was thrown from the car by the impact and suffered a fractured skull and a four-inch gash near the jugular, among other injuries. Sheriff Berg was rushed to the hospital but all attempts to save him failed. Officer Foley received 15 head stitches but survived the incident.
