Description: On February 22, 2017, Deputy Sheriff Cookson was a passenger in his personal vehicle and in civilian clothing when he was fatally injured in an automobile crash while traveling to a mandatory First Responder training. Deputy Cookson was compensated for this training and this was a classified as a scheduled workday for him. His wife, who is also a law enforcement officer, was driving the vehicle and was required to attend the same training session. Their vehicle struck a car, in heavy fog conditions, then collided with an SUV head-on. Deputy Cookson was transported to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries five days later.
