Description: Just after midnight Officer C.W. Crankshaw and his partner Officer R.C. McGill were returning to headquarters after completing their rounds. Officer Crankshaw recommended they stop at a store on Mitchell Street to buy a few items. While in the store the Officers observed a male with his pockets ?bulging.? Officer Crankshaw ordered the subject to submit to a search. The subject replied by pulling out a pistol and firing four times. Officer Crankshaw fell mortally wounded. The suspect turned to flee, but was shot down by Officer McGill. Both were transported to the hospital, but died within a few hours.
