Description: Assistant Provost Marshal Cook, second in command of the military police in Guernsey County, Ohio, was ambushed and shot by two army deserters. The soldiers went to the residence of Marshal Cook and were told that he was not there but would return soon. The soldiers left but encountered Marshal Cook shortly after, confirmed it was him and fatally shot Marshal Cook in the chest. The soldiers were apprehended, judged guilty in a court of law and executed on the gallows.
