Description: On January 31, 1891, Deputy Sheriff Cook was shot in the knee, in an exchange of gunfire, as he and a posse attempted to arrest a murder suspect. The suspect was killed. Deputy Cook rode 15 miles with a shattered kneecap to the nearest doctor. The doctor recommended amputation which Deputy Cook refused. When his leg healed it was stiff and straight so doctors broke his leg and reset it slightly bent so that he could ride his horse. Although Deputy Cook resumed his official duties, his leg continued to give him trouble over the years. Deputy Cook eventually had no choice but to have the leg amputated and died during surgery on July 21, 1918.
