Description: Patrolman Cottrell was ambushed and shot behind the Danville Police Station. Patrolman Cottrell was walking to his patrol car and when he rounded a corner the suspect shot him in the back of the head. Police dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman stating that her ex-boyfriend was armed and intent on killing a police officer. Dispatchers attempted to reach Patrolman Cottrell without success. A search began and Patrolman Cottrell's body was found 30 minutes later, his weapon and cruiser were missing. Patrolman Cottrell died at the scene. The suspect was apprehended.
