Description: On February 25, 1872, Patrol Officer Crowell was attempting to quell a disturbance when he was attacked by six men who beat him with bricks, stones and his own billy club laying the skull bare in three places. His handcuffs were also broken. The assault stopped with the arrival of the fire brigade. Officer Crowell was transported to his home and treated by a doctor. Officer Crowell continued on the force but only doing duty when he was able and frequently obliged to give up on account of his feebleness. On December 22, 1875, Officer Crowell was on duty but complained of not feeling well. He went home, fell unconscious and died later that evening.
