Description: Deputy Sheriff Cuny was ambushed and shot by an accomplice of a suspect in his custody. Deputy Sheriff Cuny had arrested a wanted member of a gang and was transporting him to the county jail, a trip that took several days. Deputy Cuny and the prisoner were in a tavern when a man entered and shot Deputy Cuny in the back. Deputy Cuny died at the scene. The prisoner and his accomplice escaped but were captured four months later.
