Description: Deputy Sheriff Carter and Officer Joe Whitt were shot in an exchange of gunfire as they attempted to arrest three bootleggers. Deputy Carter died at the scene. Officer Whitt lost his vision but survived the incident. One suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. The second and third suspects were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 and four years in prison respectively.
