Description: Officer Cortez was shot and killed after responding to an alarm at a cash-checking store. Officer Cortez responded to the call and learned from the manager that a man and woman were attempting to cash forged checks. As Officer Cortez attempted to arrest the male suspect, the suspect drew a handgun and shot Officer Cortez several times. Officer Cortez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
