Description: Patrolman Carpenter was shot and killed at the Pontiac General Hospital while guarding a prisoner who had been wounded in a shootout the previous day. Two accomplices, one posing as a nurse, attempted to free the prisoner. Patrolman Carpenter was shot but was able to return fire and kill his assailant. The prisoner and the second accomplice fled but were arrested a short time later.
