Description: Correctional Officer Cortez was killed in a single-vehicle crash while en route to inspect an inmate-staffed firefighting outpost. While traveling in a caravan with four other K-9 units to conduct searches at the facility, Officer Cortez lost control of his patrol vehicle. Officer Cortez struck a boulder, which caused his vehicle to roll over. Officer Cortez and his K-9 partner, Mattie, were killed in the crash.
