Description: Inspector Carnes and fellow officers, acting on a tip, lay in wait to capture a group of smugglers who were transporting illegal liquor from Mexico into Texas. A gun battle ensued and Inspector Carnes was shot in the abdomen. The smugglers fled back to Mexico. Inspector Carnes was rushed to the hospital where he died three days later. Ranger Quirl Carnes [Panel 14-E: 7] is the brother of Inspector Herff Carnes.
