Description: Officers Cunningham, V. Mattingly and William Gilbert of the Kentucky State Penitentiary were shot and killed by three convicts who were attempting to escape. The convicts barricaded themselves in the dining room. The siege lasted for four days until it was discovered that two of the convicts had committed suicide and the third man had died from gunshot wounds.
