Description: Town Marshal James Cockrill was ambushed and shot five times as he stood in front of a store; he died the next day. Prior to the incident, Marshal Cockrill and his brother Tom, had attempted to arrest a suspect. The suspect resisted arrest and was fatally shot by Tom Cockrill, who was later tried in a court of law and acquitted. The brother of the deceased suspect was charged with hiring a man to kill Marshal Cockrill in retaliation. Marshal Cockrill?s assailant was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
