Description: Deputy Sheriff Coffey was shot and killed by his nephew, whom he suspected of burglarizing several summer cabins. Deputy Coffey was scheduled to appear in Superior Court the next day to give testimony regarding the burglaries which would have implicated his nephew and a second suspect. Deputy Coffey completed patrol of Linville Village and returned to his home. As Deputy Coffey was seated in his living room, a shotgun blast was fired through the window. Deputy Coffey was fatally shot in front of his family. Deputy Coffey's nephew was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison.
