Description: Police Officer Conley and Sergeant Hugh Purdy drowned while saving residents during the Big Thompson Canyon Flood. Officer Conley was off-duty but quickly recognized the danger and took action. Officer Conley notified over 100 people of the oncoming wall of water rushing through the canyon. Officer Conley climbed a telephone pole in an attempt to save himself but was swept away. Over 140 people died in this incident, which was Colorado's worst natural disaster.
