Description: Texas Ranger Quirl Carnes, accompanied by Deputy Henry Lawrence and two other lawmen, were led by an informer into an ambush believing they were about to capture a gang of smugglers wanted for murder. The smugglers opened fire on the lawmen as soon as they came within range. Deputy Lawrence and Ranger Carnes were killed. The leader of the gang was also killed. Customs Inspector Herff Carnes (Panel 34-E: 7) is the brother of Ranger Quirl Carnes.
