Agent Cowley died the following day. Baby Face Nelson, who was also responsible for the deaths of Officer Francis Mulvihill, Patrolman Martin O'Brien, Officer Howard Wagner and Agent W. Carter Baum, also died in the shootout. Several months earlier in July, Agent Crowley led the investigation to apprehend John Dillinger. That attempted arrest led to a shootout that Dillinger did not survive.
