Description: Sheriff Cate and Deputy John Conway were transporting three prisoners to Knoxville by train. At a scheduled stop, three acquaintances of the prisoners came aboard, approached Deputy Conway from the rear and shot him in the back of the head. Sheriff Cate returned fire but was shot in the chest and abdomen and his body was flung from the train. The criminals forced the conductor to keep the train moving until they arrived at their getaway point and escaped.
