Description: Correction Enterprise Manager Darden, Correctional Officer Justin Smith, and Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon were fatally attacked during an escape attempt from the Pasquotank Correctional Institute in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Several inmates ignited a fire inside the Specialty Sewing Plant as a diversion. The inmates then attacked several corrections employees with claw hammers and scissors obtained in the sewing plant. Correction Enterprise Manager Darden and Correctional Officer Justin Smith succumbed to their injuries sustained the day of the incident. Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon succumbed to her injuries on October 30, 2017. Several other corrections employees were wounded during the incident.
