Description: On November 28, 1969, Detective Dowd was shot multiple times in an exchange of gunfire while attempting to apprehend an escaped prisoner who was convicted of the death of Deputy Oscar Meyer (50-W: 16). Detective Dowd returned fire and killed the suspect. Detective Dowd was transported to the hospital with five gunshot wounds. Detective Dowd suffered a host of medical issues including the removal of his pancreas, the development of diabetes and the amputation of both legs. Detective Dowd died on December 6, 1997.
