Description: Officer Dippel was one of more than 50 police officers trying to clear the streets during one of a series of riots that collectively became known as the Civil War Draft Riots. Mistaken for one of the rioters, Officer Dippel was accidentally shot by fellow police officers. Officer Dippel died of his injuries five days later. Friendly fire. Patrolmen Peter McIntyre, John Starkey and John Van Buren were also killed or fatally wounded during the riots.
