Description: Patrolman Doherty died when a barge loaded with munitions caught on fire and set off a series of explosions at Black Tom Island in Jersey City. As Patrolman Doherty searched the area of a previous explosion, another explosion occurred and he was hit in the head and abdomen with a large chunk of wood. Lehigh Valley Railroad Chief Cornelius Leyden was also killed in the blast.
