Description: Sheriff Degman was beaten with a slab of firewood after he delivered breakfast to an inmate. The inmate struck Sheriff Degman over the head three times, which fractured his skull. Sheriff Degman died shortly afterwards. The inmate attempted to flee the jail but was captured and confined. Upon hearing the news, an angry mob of 200 citizens overpowered the deputies, seized the inmate and lynched him.
