Description: Trooper Lance Dietsch, pilot, and Trooper Stanley Gerling made a sweep of the area to help locate an elderly man who had wandered away from an assisted living facility. After about 90 minutes of searching, Trooper Dietsch radioed that they had spotted the man and would circle the spot so ground searchers could locate him. The next message came from the ground searchers who reported that the plane had crashed. Trooper Gerling was killed instantly on impact. Trooper Dietsch was removed from the wreckage and taken to the Cass County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 66-year-old elderly man was found two hours later, 100 yards from the crash.
