Description: On July 18, 1942, Patrolman Denby was shot as he attempted to arrest a suspect who was disturbing the peace. Patrolman Denby removed a pistol from the suspect's jacket and was escorting the man to jail when a struggle ensued. The suspect gained control of Patrolman Denby's service weapon and shot him with his own gun. Chief Joseph Henderson was also fatally shot by the suspect in an exchange of gunfire when he rushed to the scene. Patrolman Denby died of his injuries a month later on August 28, 1942.
