Description: Inspector Stephen Dawson died while investigating suspicious persons crossing the border in the Smelter District of El Paso County. Inspector Dawson and his partner saw two men cross the river at the border and ordered them to stop. The inspectors approached the suspects when they jumped behind an embankment and six to eight smugglers opened fire on the inspectors. Inspector Dawson was hit in the chest and thigh so his partner stopped a motorist and had him take the inspector to the hospital. He died there the next morning.
